Guardiola apologizes to Gerrard: "I'm ashamed of what I said because he doesn't deserve it"

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City coach, apologized to Steven Gerrard for a comment he made last week, when he asked himself "Was his slip also our fault?", referring to when in 2014 the midfielder tripped in a duel against Chelsea, giving the go-ahead for City to win the Premier League.

Guardiola revealed this Tuesday at a press conference that he has apologized to the Englishman and that he is ashamed of himself for that comment.

"I publicly apologize to Steven Gerrard for my stupid and unnecessary comment. He knows when I admire him and how much I admire his career and everything he has done for the country where I live and work. I am ashamed of what I said because he does not deserve it. ", pointed out the Spanish coach.

Guardiola responded with that "Was your slip our fault?" before the accusations that weigh on the City for financial irregularities. The slip refers to the 2013/2014 season, in which Liverpool lost many of their chances of winning the Premier in a duel against Chelsea at Anfield in which Gerrard slipped to allow Demba Ba to score 0-1.

"I asked him for forgiveness personally, but I also have to do it here. I feel sorry for him, for his family, for his children, because he was stupid," Guardiola added.

A few days ago, the Catalan coach held a tense press conference at the gates of the match against Aston Villa on the occasion of the investigation that the Premier had opened against City.

Asked if the Manchester club should lose the titles won in the period under investigation, Guardiola responded by pointing out the worst moment of Gerrard's career:

"Come on, they belong to us. Absolutely, they belong to us. Regardless of what's happening, they belong to us. Sergio Aguero's goal with Mario Balotelli's assist (in the 2012 Premier League). I don't know if we're responsible for Steven Gerrard's slip (In the 2014 Premier League). You know, in that situation at Anfield. I didn't want it to happen out of respect for Gerrard, but... is it our fault? Come on. That belongs to us," he said.
