Girona will remove the 112 Francoist plaques that remain on buildings in the city

The Girona City Council will remove the 112 Francoist plaques that are still on buildings in the city. The Consistory will contact the property owners to remind them that, under the Law of Democratic Memory, all kinds of explicitly Falangist symbols must be withdrawn.

The mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas (Guanyem), states that "Falangist symbolism has no place in a city open and committed to the values of democracy and republicanism as Girona is".

The mayor considers that "guaranteeing a public space free of hate messages and, therefore, of fascist symbols is also a duty of every council".

In a press release, the City Council reports that it will act in a subsidiary manner if the established regulations are not complied with. The removal of these plates complies with state law, which indicates that public administrations, in the exercise of their powers, will take the appropriate measures to remove Francoist symbology plates.
