Girona City Council avoids 141 evictions in 2023 and a half to sign 29 social rentals

During 2023, the Girona City Council stopped 141 evictions that were planned in the city. The council intervened to prevent the affected families from losing their home.

In the last four years, the council has stopped 466 evictions.

Apart from the 141 that were suspended last year, in 2022 160 were avoided, 2021, 107, and 2020, 58. So far this year, it has been achieved in 69 cases.

The mediation service of the Municipal Housing Office signed up to 29 social rentals for people at risk of residential exclusion. This is a relevant figure, since it is two more than in the previous three years combined, although in 2020 it was conditional on the moratoriums due to the pandemic.

The mediation service also processes the vulnerability reports that the judicial bodies request to make an eviction effective or not. In 2023, 168 were sent.

These reports detail the situation of vulnerability and exclusion of people who may be evicted, so that judges have one more element to assess during the judicial process. In total, since the service was launched in 2012, 796 vulnerability files have been processed in Gerona.

The City Council points out that the problem of access to housing is “one of the great challenges” that the council has. For this reason, the Equality, Social Justice and Cooperation area is committed to continuing to maintain the mediation service as a measure so that "large holders apply social and affordable rents to vulnerable families instead of evictions."

In this sense, the councilor for the sector, Amy Sabaly Balde, makes it clear that the City Council's will is to continue with a “firm commitment” to increasing the public housing stock in the city of Girona.

The mediation service of the Municipal Housing Office deals with issues that can range from a simple initial telephone advice to accompaniment before a notary when the negotiation is finalized, going through all the intermediate phases of the procedure such as accompaniment, delivery of documentation, negotiation before the entity or suspension of launches.
