Genealogical tourism to rediscover the past

Nobody has the slightest doubt that the tourist charms of our country are first class. To the beauty of its landscapes, to the richness of its artistic, cultural and historical heritage and to its extraordinary culinary offer, a new attraction is added that is increasingly attracting many tourists. In recent years, the interest in the origin of our ancestors has become an international issue and thousands of people cross all kinds of borders to discover their family genesis. It is what is beginning to be known as genealogical tourism.

At the Arxiu Comarcal de l'Alt Empordà, its manager, Èrika Serna, receives several monthly inquiries from all over the world interested in finding out if her lineage derives from any part of the Empordà. After a few questions, and after guiding the archivist about the traces left by her ancestors, Serna instructs the consultants on how to approach the investigation. “The origin of the requests is very wide and we receive them from Northern Catalonia to America, from many successors who went to try their luck in Cuba or Argentina”, she explains.
