Galicia remains faithful to the PP

The PP has revalidated the absolute majority in Galicia in a clear way, which is what was at stake, and the good expectations of the Bloc have been confirmed, which has achieved six more seats. What no survey had foreseen is the setback of the socialists, who have lost five deputies. So much to think about the wear and tear that the defeat in Galicia was going to mean for Alberto Núñez Feijóo and it turns out that in the end the one who was left this Sunday looking like a failure was Pedro Sánchez.

As we wrote this Sunday in this same section, what the leader of the PSOE is really interested in is staying in the Moncloa and he has already suffered other electoral debacles – such as in the last regional and municipal appointments – but he has remained undaunted in his objectives of focusing at the end of the legislature. The Galician accident joins the Andalusian, the Valencian, the Aragonese, the Madrid... but Sánchez will cling to Moncloa. Of course: this Sunday's result is going to give extra ammunition to the popular opposition to try to further erode his government.

And it's time to talk about the PP. Even though he lost two seats, it is a landslide victory. It is not easy to achieve an absolute majority for the fifth consecutive time and with more votes than four years ago. The Galicians have once again trusted the PP, and without detracting from the great success of the Bloc and its future prospects, the present today is called Alfonso Rueda, who can be satisfied with having overcome Feijóo's replacement with a brilliant note.

It is clear that the Galicians opposed to the PP management have found their niche in Ana Pontón's party. In addition to the fall of the socialists, neither Sumar nor Podemos have been able to obtain even a deputy's certificate. Another blow for a coalition government party. The reading is clear: the Bloc has benefited from making a serious and rigorous opposition and has eaten up the left. And finally the surprise has been the appearance of Democracia Ourensana, whose role in the Galician Parliament is not going to be transcendent because the absolute majority of the PP is very solid.
