For the first time, Spain does not reach 300,000 births in the first 11 months of a year

Spain has registered 294,856 births in the first eleven months of 2023, which is 6,504 less than in the same period of 2022 and the first time in the series that 300,000 births have not been exceeded in the first eleven months of a year, according to the monthly birth estimates from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

According to INE data, collected by Europa Press, during the first eleven months of 2023, it is estimated that 294,856 children have been born in Spain, compared to 301,360 in 2022; 308,294 in 2021; 317,181 in 2020; 329,554 in 2019; 340,340 in 2018; and 359,424 in 2017. The downward trend thus continues since these monthly data were recorded.

In the absence of accounting for the last month of the year, in 2023 births from January to November have fallen by just over 2% compared to the previous year. It is the smallest annual drop since 2017 —the INE offers the data since 2016—: the largest drop at the national level was experienced in 2018, when the number of births contracted more than 5%.

By community, only Madrid (about 2.5%, representing 1,100 more births) and Extremadura (a little less than 1.5%, just over 80 babies) grow slightly. Andalusia —with nearly 56,500— and Catalunya —just under 50,000— are the provinces with the highest number of births, although both (2.3% and 3.32% respectively) lose the number of births. Those that do it the most, however, are La Rioja, Castilla - La Mancha (both more than 10%) and Aragón (a little more than 4.5%).

Regarding the age of the women, the INE data indicate that, one more month, in November 2023 there were more births to mothers over 40 years of age (2,934 births) than to those under 25 years of age (2,446 births). Furthermore, in November 2023, 27,507 children were born in Spain, which represents 804 fewer than in the same month of 2022 and Spain has not exceeded 30,000 births in a month for more than two years, since October 2021.

Regarding deaths, in the 52 weeks of 2023, that is, until December 31, a total of 433,533 people died in Spain, which represents 26,945 fewer than in the same period of 2022 and the lowest figure in those weeks since 2019, according to the INE estimate.

Finally, for each year, deaths in Spain in this period of time have been 433,533 estimated in 2023; 460,478 in 2022; 447,772 in 2021; 489,332 in 2020; 414,914 in 2019 and 423,994 in 2018.
