for a handful of votes

That EH Bildu participate in the Spanish elections and that the former Batasuna militants who are now part of this organization have renounced the armed struggle is a triumph of democracy. It does not enter my head that there may be people who, out of pure electoral interest, want to see them again outside of parliamentary bodies. Ignorance is very bad, and there is a lot of ignorance about who is behind this Basque formation. The current leaders of Bildu are not all former gunmen of the terrorist group, but many of them were persecuted in their day by ETA itself for maintaining pacifist positions and against violence. That now all together are part of the democratic game is very good news.

Just as the accusation of an alleged collusion between the PSOE and ETA is also outrageous. We are all the result of our professional and personal experience, and I will never forget the drama of some funerals that I lived intensely, such as Fernando Buesa's in Vitoria in February 2000. Surely some who make these comparisons would not dare to make them today if they had lived through all those scenes of pain and bitterness.

The organizations of victims of terrorism have done well to criticize Bildu for including candidates with blood crimes, and the Basque formation has done well to rectify. Final point and the topic should not give more of itself. What Isabel Díaz Ayuso is looking for now, calling for the banning of Bildu, is a leading role to achieve an absolute majority in Madrid. And she drives home the nail on the head by traveling to Bilbao this weekend to broaden the controversy and, depending on how it is received, to be able to present herself as a victim. In her eagerness to win votes, she has not even minded criticizing a leader of the victims' association, Consuelo Ordóñez. I don't think Ayuso needs all this gesticulation to achieve her goals. And Alberto Núñez Feijóo is right not to second it. It makes no sense to outlaw Bildu today.
