For a 2023 with better news

2022 is over. It should have been the year of the definitive return to normality after the control of the pandemic (at the beginning of the year we stopped counting the cases) and it has been the year of the return of the war to Europe, the increase in the price of the shopping basket, that of the hottest summer of our lives and that of the toxic stagnation of some institutions.

We have tried to tell you about it in the clearest and most interesting way possible, giving different perspectives on each piece of news and seeking to offer you not only the keys to what has happened, but also to anticipate what is to come.

Thus, many of the emails that readers have written to me throughout this year began with an introduction highlighting the things they like about our newspaper (from the big opinion and analysis firms to pastimes), to then point out points where they thought we were wrong. Others started their messages without being able to hide their astonishment at some of the slip-ups we have committed. With your help, we've fixed bugs that we might not have caught, discovered news, and reviewed decisions that after implementing them we found weren't working as expected.

Among the main reasons why you, readers, have resorted to the Ombudsman are approaches to certain information, which you have considered biased; the use of words or expressions that seemed offensive to them; Errors caused by slips or lack of verification of data, such as when we have made a mistake in the nationality of the protagonist of a piece of information, in a number or on a date. They have also written to me on numerous occasions to point out that they have missed information on our pages that they considered relevant. And what has surprised them the most is when we have missed syntactic or spelling mistakes.

From here, thanks both to those who have been encouraged to write to me with the purpose of stretching our ears when we have made a mistake and to those who have congratulated us for reports or approaches that they have liked.

All of you want your reference header, La Vanguardia, to maintain its quality and reliability intact -both in the printed edition and in the digital edition, which adds new subscribers every month- and you are the reason for the newspaper's existence. In 2023 we will not only try to do better, but we would also like to be able to give you better news.

Have a Merry Christmas and see you in 2023!
