Filmtopia, the new website specialized in films made by women, is born

Film lovers are in luck because they have a new platform to enjoy content specialized in films made by women, although not exclusively directors. This is Filmtopia, whose objective is to inform, promote and celebrate cinema made by all women working in all fields, from all professions and from all over the world through the work of filmmakers from the past, present and future. future.

"Cinema was invented more than 120 years ago and women have been working in different sectors since then, often ignored and even erased from history. Filmtopia wants to highlight the contribution that women have made, make and will continue to make in the history of cinema", point out its creators, Marta Armengou, who directed Betevé's 'La Cartellera' film program for 13 years, and the film critic Núria Vidal.

The platform will feed its content with reviews of films released in theaters and on platforms and reviews of series. There will be audiovisual content, videos, filmed interviews, reviews, articles... Information about books not only current, but also recovering essential classic titles. Chronicles of national and international festivals, in-depth reports with special relevance to current affairs, and essays and studies that value debate and critical thinking. In addition to an agenda of current activities such as exhibitions, film shows, programming from Film Archives or cultural centers.

But Filmtopia will also deal in a very special way with the Past. "We know that there are many women who, from the pioneers of silent cinema until now, have contributed with their work to building the history of cinema. Most of these women are completely unknown and that is why we want to rescue them from oblivion, vindicate them and present them to the new generations that do not have female references. For that we will make Filmoportraits, biographies of historical figures, who have made valuable influential contributions in the evolution of the seventh art and we will look for fundamental films that have never been seen or have been lost a long time ago. of the past is to project oneself into the future," they add.

Filmtopia will also have a section where the new generations will be given a voice, with hidden works by many new creators and will give visibility to new professions. In short, bet on tomorrow's cinema.

Armengou and Vidal's desire is for the web "to be a plural and participatory medium, through collaborations with subscribers, through talks, film forums, debates, workshops, master classes, etc. This community character is one of the keys to the project to become a place where you can inform yourself, communicate, learn, share, give your opinion. But it is not a website intended exclusively for women. Although we know that the female audience is the one who will find the most affinity in Filmtopia, we want to keep in mind an increasingly sensitive and interested male audience".

Filmtopia is now a reality with the publication of several newsletters, a YouTube channel where you can see all the interviews and videos that have been made so far. The website is not yet finished, which is why they have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Verkami with which they want to offer the opportunity to purchase subscriptions to the platform in advance, at very low prices and with limited rewards.
