Figueres celebrates its main festival in the midst of a garbage strike

The city of Figueres will put the finishing touch tomorrow to the Fires and Festes de la Santa Creu, its biggest festival, with an unresolved garbage collectors strike. Since last Friday, waste has been piling up on public roads and the labor dispute remains entrenched.

This afternoon, the Figueres City Council has denounced the union calling the strike to the Girona social court and the nine people who signed the document calling for protest.

In addition, the City Council is working on the preparation of an emergency decree for unsanitary conditions "due to accumulation of garbage, unsanitary conditions and circulation problems" that would authorize the municipal government to urgently hire a company to clean the city streets, which are overflowing of garbage.

The mayoress of Figueres, Agnès Lladó, has described the call for a strike of which the city "is being a victim" as "illegal, unfair and arbitrary". "Some individuals, acting in bad faith, are taking advantage of the holidays to harm the interests of Figueres and attack the prestige of the city," Lladó said, calling the situation "unsustainable."

He also criticizes that the workers did not ratify the agreement that they closed with the union spokesmen this Sunday to end the strike and denounced the non-compliance with the minimum services required by law. He still points out that the negotiation remains open.

The conveners demand a "unitary agreement" that brings together the workers of Ecoserveis, the mixed company that manages the garbage, as well as those who went to the public company Fisersa. Vice Mayor Pere Casellas stated today that it is not possible.
