FIBA rejects Turkey's appeal in tense loss to Georgia

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has rejected Turkey's appeal against the result of the match that the Turkish team lost last Sunday against Georgia with 88-83, Spain's rivals in group A of the Eurobasket, the Turkish press reported on Tuesday. .

The Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) had filed an appeal against the result, noting that, when a foul occurred that caused serious clashes after the game, with 4 minutes and 48 seconds remaining, the game clock continued to tick until the end of the match. 4 minutes and 26 seconds, without being played. With 22 seconds remaining in the match, TBF had demanded either to replay the entire match or at least replay the 4.5 minutes remaining.

However, FIBA has rejected the appeal on the grounds that although the advancement of the clock violates the rules, Turkey has not provided solid evidence that this error has determined the outcome of the game, says the Turkish agency Anadolu.

The incident in the final stretch of the match ended with the disqualification of the Georgian player Duda Sanadze and the Turkish player Furkan Korkmaz, who faced each other on the court. A fight that would have also moved to the locker room tunnel, causing great tensions between both countries. According to Turkey's version, Furkan was assaulted by several members of the Georgian team on his way to the locker room.

Turkey has threatened to withdraw from the tournament if FIBA does not quickly investigate what happened, analyzing the security cameras, but for now it remains in the competition and will play today (1:30 p.m.) against Belgium. At the same time, FIBA has assured that it is investigating the players' incident to decide whether to order disciplinary measures, adds the aforementioned agency.

Turkey and Georgia share a group with Spain in the Eurobasket, along with Belgium and Montenegro. Right now Group A is a real powder keg with a fourfold tie for the top places between Montenegro, Belgium, Turkey and Spain. An uncertain scenario that could leave the team out of the Eurobasket if it does not recover the path of victory.

This Tuesday, in addition to Montengro-Spain (4:15 p.m.), the duels between Belgium and Turkey (1:30 p.m.), and the match between Georgia and Bulgaria (7:00 p.m.) will be played. On the last day of the group stage, Spain will face Turkey.
