Female managers reduce their presence in the company from 19% to 17%

Gender equality in the company is still far from being a reality. According to the report Salary gap and presence of women in managerial positions 2022, the presence of women in positions of high responsibility has been reduced from 18.8 to 16.8% between 2021 and 2022, truncating an upward trend that began in 2016 .

"The reduction of teleworking has reduced the flexibility and conciliation necessary for women and the crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine has changed the priorities of companies, now focused on the survival of business", explained this morning Indry Canchila, partner of the ICSA consultancy and Aline Masuda, professor at the Eada business school.

However, the salary gap (which measures the difference in salaries between men and women) has been reduced. In one year, it has gone from 14.4 to 13.1%, an indicator that shows a slow progress towards equality but confirms that women continue to earn less for performing the same function.

The causes of persistent inequality must be found in cultural reasons. "Women have less confidence in their bargaining power when it comes to fighting for increases in their salary. It must also be taken into account that motherhood tends to slow down their salary increases," the authors of the report pointed out.

The study, which collects a sample of 80,000 salary data from different companies operating in Spain, shows that the differences are different depending on the size of the companies. While in large companies the wage gap is lower (5.5%), the presence of women in positions of high responsibility is barely 19%. A situation that contrasts with the medium-sized company, where the wage difference is much higher, 15%, although the presence of women is 25%. Small companies are where the greatest equality is achieved: more than half of management positions are held by women, although the salary difference is 9%.

By managerial positions, it is shown one more year that the difference is accentuated in general management positions -barely 8.8%- and production management (5.9%) while in positions of human resources responsibility they represent the 32.9%.
