Feet in summer: prevention is enjoyment

With the arrival of summer, it is common for us to get rid of closed shoes and opt for the use of flip flops to combat the high temperatures. However, the abuse of this practice leaves our feet unprotected and generates changes in our normal gait, which can lead to various pathologies and discomfort.

Dr. Fernando Cereto, assistant to the Internal Medicine Service of Hospital Quirónsalud Barcelona and director of the Clinical Trials Unit warns: "It is important for our feet, during the summer season, to take some precautions to keep them healthy and prevent problems."

The prolonged use of flip flops in public and humid places such as swimming pools and showers can expose us to infections and undesirable pathologies. One of the main concerns is the contraction of plantar papillomas, a viral condition that spreads easily in warm and humid environments.

But frequent use of flip flops can lead to other ailments such as fasciitis, posterior tibial tendinitis, Achilles tendon problems and forefoot pain. These conditions are due, to a large extent, to the lack of support and cushioning offered by flip flops, which can affect our gait and cause injuries.

It is essential to pay attention to the traumatisms that we can suffer when wearing flip flops, since, being an open shoe, our feet are more exposed to blows and accidents. Therefore, it is advisable to find a balance and alternate the use of flip flops with closed and comfortable shoes, preferably with personalized orthopedic insoles, especially if we already have some discomfort in the feet or in the back.

Pedicure and proper nail care also play an essential role in the health of our feet. Keeping your nails short and straight and square helps prevent growth problems, as well as possible infections. In case of having thickened nails, it is advisable to go to a podiatrist to perform an adequate milling.

In addition to the aforementioned care, it is important to maintain good foot hydration to avoid dryness and hardness. Applying a moisturizing cream after washing, paying special attention to the heels, will help keep the skin soft and prevent cracks.

In conclusion, as Dr. Cereto points out: "Our feet endure great efforts on a daily basis and deserve adequate attention in our care and hygiene routines."

During the summer, it is crucial to pay attention to the necessary precautions to avoid infections, pathologies and damage to our feet. The proper use of flip flops in humid public places, alternating with closed and comfortable footwear, nail care and proper hydration are fundamental aspects to enjoy this season without discomfort.

We should not underestimate the importance of our feet in our general health and well-being. If we experience persistent pain, discomfort or changes in the skin of the feet, it is advisable to seek the opinion of a health professional, such as a podiatrist, who will be able to provide us with an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

In short, taking care of our feet during the summer will allow us to fully enjoy this time of year, without worries or unnecessary ailments. Let's prioritize your well-being and walk comfortably in every step we take!
