In La Vanguardia Readers' Photos we can see this series of photographs of the velella on l'Escala beach, in the Alt Empordà region.

These are velellas, also known as sea sail or purple sail, which are like tiny soft-shell mussels.

When you touch them it is like blue mud and seeing them covering the sand of the beach is a spectacle that can be admired from time to time.

They are like little jellyfish. Its scientific name is Velella velella, also the popular name is barqueta de Sant Pere (little boat of Saint Peter), since that is when they usually arrive at the end of June, between San Juan and San Pedro, but in this case they have come early April, as we can see.

Now, they have also been seen on L'Escala beach in the month of March, as happened in 2021 and was also documented photographically.
