Defused a half-ton bomb from World War II in Budapest

A half-tonne World War II bomb was deactivated today by army specialists after being detected in a section of the Danube river located in a southern district of Budapest, the local agency MTI reported.

After cordoning off the area and neutralizing the device, members of the Bomb Disposal Regiment of the Hungarian Army removed it from the river with a special crane, amid a deployment of security measures.

The bomb, weighing 500 kilograms and of US origin, was found in the so-called Oil Bay on Csepel Island and will be transported by river to a special army center. After concluding the operation, the Police lifted movement restrictions in the affected area.

The Hungarian capital, Budapest, was heavily bombed at the end of World War II by the Allied powers, before being liberated from occupation by Nazi forces after a 51-day siege.
