'Cerdita' wins the Méliès de Oro award at the Sitges Festival

'Cerdita' wins the Méliès de Oro award at the Sitges Festival

Cerdita, Carlota Pereda's feature film debut based on her short film of the same name, awarded a Goya in 2018, won the Méliès d'Or award this Tuesday, which is awarded annually by the International Federation of Méliès Festivals in recognition of the best European feature film and short film. in an act that has taken place at the Sitges Film Festival.

Starring Laura Galán, the film is a thriller set in an Extremaduran town during the summer season that combines revenge and drama around a teenager with overweight problems who is bullied by the other girls in the town.

Pereda has assured that it is "an honor to be part of this excellent list of titles and authors of the fantasy and horror genre", and has acknowledged that he never imagined, despite "dreaming many things, some dark and terrifying", that he would appreciate this award "in Sitges, Mecca, my home".

Little Pig, with clear references to titles of the genre such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Jeepers Creepers, is part of the official out-of-competition section of the contest, where it was presented last Saturday, and will hit theaters next Friday, October 14 after dazzling at festivals such as Sundance, Fantastic Fest and San Sebastián.

In an interview with La Vanguardia, Galán said that he happily lent his body to Sara because he was clear that it was "a story that had to be told starkly and openly." Far from what happens to the protagonist due to her physical appearance, the actress assures that "I have always been fat but I have never suffered bullying and I think it is important to say so because it cannot be the norm."

In previous years, the Méliès de Oro award has gone to prestigious filmmakers such as Joachim Trier (Thelma, 2017), Julia Ducournau (Crudo, 2016), Sion Sono (Guilty of Romance, 2011) or Rodrigo Cortés (Buried, 2010).
