The European Commission will monitor the increases in telecommunications rates so that there are no violations of the rights of customers or a negative impact on the market.

This was stated by the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, in a written response to a question from the Italian MEP Denis Nesci, who questioned the Community Executive about the initiatives that he intends to adopt in light of the increase in prices announced by the transalpine operators TIM and WindTre through an automatic review clause linked to the CPI.

Breton assures that as long as the 'telephones' respect the regulations of prior information to subscribers on the revision of their rates and the periods of free cancellation of contracts, "there is no element that suggests a violation of the rights of consumers".

It also adds that the evaluation of whether the operators comply with European legislation in this area is the responsibility of the Member States and it would be up to them, in any case, to take the appropriate measures.

However, in the response, to which Servimedia has had access, the commissioner warns that the Commission "will closely follow the evolution of the market and the trends related to the change in tariffs to detect abusive practices as soon as possible that could translate into a violation of the rights of end users or that may have a negative impact on the internal market”.
