Until the Spanish Civil War, it was common to see long lines of consumptives, anemics and tuberculosis patients in front of slaughterhouses to fill their bowls with the blood of slaughtered animals, convinced that drinking it would cure them of their ills. That same baseless fraud caused wealthy patients to hire hitmen to supply them with child's blood, much more "effective", according to their beliefs. They were vampires, blood drinkers who sought to extend their lives... in exchange for another life.
