Barcelona will restrict access to the Carmel bunkers while asbestos removal lasts

Barcelona City Council will restrict access to the Carmel bunkers for at least three weeks, while the work to remove at least 40 kilos of asbestos lasts. Municipal sources detail that these tasks will be carried out by zones, and each one of them will be closed to the public until it is cleaned up.

This morning the technicians hired by the City Council were still finalizing their work plan on site. The councilor responsible for the Horta-Guinardó district, the socialist Lluís Rabell, has just confirmed that the cleaning operation itself will start this Monday.

These disturbing debris came to light this September after an episode of rain. They are concentrated mainly on the north side of the viewpoint and in the vicinity of Marià Labèrnia street. Most likely, they are remains of the barracks that stood here for decades.

Neighbors in the surrounding area understand that the asbestos came to light as a result of the installation work on the perimeter fence of the premises carried out last spring, and also the continuous movement of visitors, who do not stop removing these lands.

The work will start this Monday, and municipal technicians do not rule out that more remains, initially unforeseen, will be found. In fact, it is not the first time that asbestos appears in this area. In recent years, several withdrawal operations have been carried out, some of them larger than this last one.

The removal of asbestos will be carried out by specialized workers from a company expressly hired by the City Council for this, in order to comply with all safety protocols.
