Barcelona recovers the Font d'en Fargas as a public space

Barcelona City Council has completed the recovery work of the Font d'en Fargues heritage site, an emblematic and historic space in the neighborhood that bears its name in the Horta-Guinardó district and which now looks again as it did in the years of its maximum splendor.

The modernist elements of the kiosk and the old water bottling plant have been restored with maximum respect for the original appearance and materials and with the idea of giving them new uses. Likewise, a project has been developed to improve the accessibility of the landscaped surroundings to recover this entire environment as a place for walking and recreation.

The restoration of the heritage has been done based on a previous historical study, carried out by Mònica Maspoch, and the drafting of the project and the direction of the work, which has been carried out by the Arquitectura Genís Planelles office. Finally, the execution was carried out by the company RECOP Restauraciones Arquitectónicas.

The restored heritage elements are the beverage kiosk, the old packaging plant, the fountain and grotto and the exterior retaining wall.

The drinks kiosk has been restored, recovering the original elements. The existence of old images of the area along with the conservation of original materials and drawings in the same kiosk have allowed the technicians to make a very exact recovery of this small modernist jewel.

The kiosk has been adapted to once again have the functions it had originally had as a beach bar, once the necessary administrative procedure to put it into operation is carried out, which will allow this service to open in the coming months.

The fountain and the grotto have also been the subject of a restoration process to highlight the elements that are part of it, such as the spring and the bench. The work carried out has also consolidated the rock that makes up the grotto and the adjoining stone walls.

In the old packaging plant, located right next to the fountain, the access door has been restored, the original elements have been recovered and the interior has been restored, where a public toilet has been located that will be managed by the concessionaire of the beach bar.

The exterior retaining wall, located next to the bottling plant, has also been restored, as well as the adaptation of the exterior lighting of the entire complex.

Likewise, the adaptation of the environments has been carried out to improve access and space in general.

The entire project, which has been carried out from November 2022 to December 2023, has involved an investment of nearly 3 million euros.
