Barcelona is the European region with the most sustainable tourist accommodation

The province of Barcelona, with the Catalan capital at the forefront, is the area in Europe that has the most tourist accommodation with sustainable certification, according to a new indicator from the European Union.

This is the Environmental Labels ans Schemes indicator, which places Barcelona ahead of destinations such as Stockholm and Amsterdam, as reported this Saturday by the city council led by Jaume Collboni.

The Barcelona destination, made up of the city and the twelve regions of the province, has 283 accommodations that have managed to demonstrate their sustainable practices and that have been recognized with this European certificate.

Barcelona is followed in the ranking, at a great distance, by Stockholm, with 134; Amsterdam, with 95; the Greek island of Kalymnos, with 83, and Vienna, with 78.

Barcelona City Council has assured that the city and the province have been working for years to build a tourist community that respects the environment, within the framework of the Commitment to Tourism Sustainability Destination Barcelona Biosphere program, promoted by the Barcelona Provincial Council, the council, the Chamber of Commerce and the Barcelona Tourism Consortium.

In fact, about a thousand tourism companies and entities already have Biosphere accreditation, prior to the new indicator created by the EU, which seeks the sustainability of the sector by involving both institutions and organizations as well as the business community.

The new European indicator will be updated every year and will track progress to minimize environmental impact and increase digitalisation and socio-economic resilience.
