At least 17 people die due to landslides due to the rains in Nepal

At least 17 people died and another seven are missing due to landslides caused by heavy rains in western Nepal, official sources said on Saturday.

The heavy rains triggered landslides in three different areas, said Dipesh Rijal, the head of the Achham district where the landslides took place.

"Western Nepal has been hit by incessant rain for the past three days, the rainfall has affected the power grid and road transport in Achham," Rijal said.

The source specified that seven people remain unaccounted for, adding that search and rescue teams have been mobilized in the area.

Last week, at least five people were killed by floods and landslides in Darchula district, on the western border with India.

At least 175 people have died in the last year in Nepal due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains associated with the monsoon, which usually affects the country from the beginning of June to the end of September, according to the latest data from the Nepalese Ministry of the Interior.

An important part of the Nepalese population lives in mountainous areas sensitive to this type of catastrophe.

Last October, the country registered an unusual record of torrential rainfall that caused more than 100 deaths and significant material damage in the agricultural sector worth 100 million dollars.
