Arrested for extorting a man to whom he lent 3,000 euros for eight months

Agents of the National Police have arrested a 31-year-old man in Alicante who extorted another person for eight months to claim a debt incurred for a loan. The arrested man made a loan of 3,000 euros to the victim with an "exorbitant" interest and whose amount increased monthly. Although the victim paid the detainee up to 12,000 euros, he demanded 20,000 euros from him, knowing that he could not pay that debt.

The investigation, carried out by the First Group of the Drugs and Organized Crime Unit of the Provincial Police Station of Alicante, began after the complaint of the victim, who had been living for months under threats against his physical integrity from another man. that he had lent him money, as reported by the National Police in a statement.

According to what the victim told the agents, at the beginning of August 2022 he had requested money from a man who was dedicated to making loans. This person lent him the amount of 3,000 euros, but, taking advantage of the victim's precarious situation, he applied "exorbitant" interest to the loan, since in exchange for the 3,000 euros he would have to return 5,000 within a month. , "knowing that he would not be able to pay off the debt so soon."

Likewise, when the agreed period to pay the loan expired and the debt was not paid by the victim, the lender proposed that for each month of delay he would have to pay 1,500 euros more, to which the victim agreed because he could not pay it any other way. .

Given the impossibility of the complainant to pay off the debt "so quickly", the victim extended the payment of the debt month by month with payments of 1,500 euros. Thus, she paid up to eight times, which made a total of 12,000 euros.

The perpetrator, knowing that the victim could not pay the debt incurred, gave him an ultimatum and explained that he would give him "a few months" to pay off the debt but that to do so he would finally have to pay him 20,000 euros.

In addition, he coerced and threatened the victim with "ruining his life" or "beating him up" if he did not make the requested payment or if he reported the incident to the Police.

After a series of police efforts, the agents have identified the perpetrator of the events, who has a history of other crimes, who has been located and arrested for the alleged commission of a crime of extortion. The detainee, 31 years old and of Spanish nationality, has been placed at the disposal of the Alicante Court of Investigation.
