His girlfriend's trip to Madrid has triggered the capture of an Italian fugitive for whom there was a search and arrest warrant at the European level.
The man was wanted by the Italian judicial authorities for double attempted homicide and illegal possession of weapons. He could face up to 12 years in jail.
The fugitive belonged to an Italian criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking and the legal claim was related to the attempted murder of two members of a rival organization in Italy, whom he shot numerous times.
Thanks to the rapid collaboration between the Spanish and Italian police authorities -in the framework of the ENFAST Network- it was possible to learn that the detainee's girlfriend was going to catch a flight to Madrid where she was going to meet him.
The Italian authorities had classified the fugitive as "extremely dangerous" and did not rule out the possibility that "he was armed and tried to flee by all means." The National Police even warns in its note that he could have activated "counter-surveillance devices to make sure that no one around him could be followed by police officers."
The Spanish investigators coordinated with the Italian police force to deploy a complex international police device that began in Italy. The Italian authorities began following the fugitive's couple until they arrived at the airport, being able to observe how she took great security measures to make sure she was not followed by the police. Upon his arrival in Spain, another device was organized, this time by agents of the National Police, to cover his arrival in Madrid.
Once he landed at the airport, the agents continued to monitor him until he arrived at the destination where the fugitive was located. Once the presence of the fugitive was detected, a police deployment was carried out for his arrest and, after being surprised, he fled through a park in the capital until he was arrested by the agents, one of them suffering injuries during the arrest .
