Amazon will invest 1,000 million in electrifying its transport in Europe

The e-commerce giant Amazon will invest more than 1,000 million euros over five years to electrify its European transport network, as announced on Monday, and reach 10,000 electric vans and 1,500 trucks by 2025. The decision seeks to reduce emissions of carbon and achieve more sustainable deliveries.

"The implementation of thousands of electric vans, long-distance trucks and bicycles will help us move even further away from traditional fossil fuels," Andy Jassy, CEO, said in a statement. "To reach net zero carbon emissions - by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement - substantial and sustained investment will be required," he warns.

With the Amazon plan, it will reach 10,000 electric delivery vans by 2025, from the current 3,000, and 1,500 heavy electric vehicles, from the 25 it will have in the United Kingdom and Germany by the end of the year. "Long-distance transport is a difficult sector to decarbonize due to the size and weight of trucks and trailers, and the long distances they must travel," the note points out. "It is one of the areas that poses the greatest challenges when it comes to decarbonizing," says Jassy.

The measure wants to have a dragging effect, promoting the industry and the public electric recharging network to promote a change in the mobility model. Here it is pointed out that the production of heavy electric vehicles and the availability of charging infrastructure "are limited". To remedy this, it will build "hundreds of specialized fast chargers in its European facilities", allowing charges in two hours.
