A triathlete died last Sunday during the IRONMAN 70.3 in Barcelona, a tough test in which more than 5,000 people had registered and was held in Calella.
As the organization reflects in a statement, in the middle distance test, during the cycling segment, "two athletes suffered an accident." IRONMAN confirmed, shortly after, the fatal outcome.
"One of the athletes suffered a major medical episode and received medical attention on site before being transferred to a nearby hospital, where he continued to receive treatment," the organization said in a statement. "Despite medical efforts, the athlete died a few hours later."
"We share our deepest condolences with the athlete's family and friends and will continue to offer them our support during these difficult times."
The other victim also received medical attention, but was discharged without serious injuries.
The race consisted of three parts: a swim - a single 1.9 km lap on Calella beach -, a bicycle ride - 90 km from Calella to Mongat and back -, and a running - a two-lap route. 21.1 km from Calella beach to Pineda de Mar—.
