A teacher and a student are injured during an experiment at a high school in Verges

A teacher and a second-year ESO student from the Verges institute-school (Baix Empordà) suffered burns this Monday during an experiment in chemistry class.

The events occurred shortly after two in the afternoon. During the class, a mixture was being made with alcohol, sand, sugar and baking soda. Since the mixture was not working, the student added more alcohol, which caused a fire that ended up injuring the teacher and the student. The student has suffered burns on the elbow and the teacher on the chest and neck.

Following the incident, the Medical Emergency Service (SEM) sent two ambulances and a medical helicopter to the scene, which transported the teacher to the Vall d'Hebron hospital. The student was taken to the same hospital by ambulance. According to the SEM, initially his condition is less serious.

The accident took place at the Francesc Cambó i Batlle de Verges institute-school, specifically in the courtyard, during a chemistry class in secondary school. The experiment has not gone as planned and has ended up injuring the teacher and the student.

The notice of the accident was received around 2:15 p.m. Agents from the Mossos investigation unit also went to the site to inspect the classroom. The police have opened an investigation into the event, to determine the causes of the accident.
