A heat wave hits Greece and forces the closure of the Acropolis, in pictures

The archaeological site of the Acropolis in Athens, one of the most visited monuments in Europe, will remain closed for five hours this Friday due to the extreme heat wave that is hitting Greece, local authorities announced today.

According to the National Meteorological Service of Greece (EMI), the heat wave is expected to reach its peak this Friday, with temperatures of up to 42 degrees in the Hellenic capital and up to 44 in the central part of the country.

The authorities already took some measures yesterday in the historic place, such as erecting small pavilions and distributing water to the thousands of tourists who daily come to the Acropolis. However, today it was decided that these measures will not be enough during the midday heat and announced the closure of the site from 12:00 to 17:00 local time.

The high temperatures are also affecting other European countries. Spain is immersed in a strong heat wave, Italy will record temperatures of up to 45 degrees in the coming days and Croatia is suffering several fires.
