The botanical garden of Barcelona is celebrating its anniversary. This unique space in Montjuïc celebrates 25 years after its inauguration in April 1999 on the site of what was the mountain's former landfill. The site, located between the castle and the Olympic stadium, has more than 20,000 plants of 2,000 species of Mediterranean flora distributed throughout its 14 hectares.
The garden allows you to take a walk through the plants of the world through the five regions of the planet with Mediterranean climate conditions. In addition to the Mediterranean basin, the visitor can discover the vegetation of Australia, South Africa, Chile and California. The space was designed by architects Carles Ferrater and Josep Lluís Canosa, landscape architect Bet Figueras, biologist Joan Pedrola and horticulturist Artur Bossy.
Among the main objectives of the garden are to contribute to the preservation of special plants and promote dissemination to raise awareness among citizens. In this sense, the facility has a seed bank to conserve the plant biodiversity of Catalonia, as well as a collection of bonsai trees of Mediterranean species. In the upper part of the garden is also located the Institut Botànic de Barcelona, a mixed center of the Barcelona City Council and the CSIC dedicated to botanical research.
To commemorate the anniversary, this Sunday, April 21, the venue is holding an open day with different activities aimed at all audiences, with live music, circus shows, flower carpets, storytelling, monologues, games, guided tours and a gastronomic proposal with food trucks.
To facilitate access, a shuttle bus service will be made available to citizens between Plaza Espanya and the Botanical Garden ticket offices. The service will start at 10:00 a.m. on Maria Cristina Avenue, next to the Venetian Towers, and the last bus will be at 8:00 p.m. on Doctor Font i Quer Street, at the garden ticket office.
