Disney will follow in Netflix's footsteps and apply restrictions on shared accounts. The first country in which these limitations will be implemented will be Canada, where as of November 1, users of the platform will already suffer from this new policy that establishes that accounts can only be shared with devices associated with the home.
This comes at a time when Disney is about to launch a new plan with announcements in Spain on November 1, as well as in Canada. The introduction of this plan, which has been available in the United States for some time, could suggest that the shared account restriction policy will also reach Spain in 2024. This same week it was learned that another competitor in the streaming market, Amazon will integrate ads into Prime Video.
Although it is not yet clear how Disney will enforce this policy, it is likely that it will rely on tracking the IP addresses and devices used to access the platform, much like Netflix did (so far, with good results).
For now, the company sent an email to subscribers in Canada announcing this change in its policy. "We are implementing restrictions on your ability to share your account or login credentials outside of your home," they noted.
Disney's new policy on subscription plans is also already posted on the service's website in Spain. The platform warns that: "You will not be able to share your subscription outside your home." And they clarify that "'Home' means the collection of devices associated with your primary residence, to the extent that they are used by people who reside there."
The increase in restrictions on account sharing comes at a time when the streaming industry is constantly evolving. In addition to these measures, the platforms are also adjusting their prices, with Disney announcing rate increases in August in Spain.
Starting in November, users in Spain will be able to choose between several plans, including one with ads for 5.99 euros per month, a standard one without ads for 8.99 euros per month and a premium plan without ads, with 4K content and HDR, for 11.99 euros per month.
