Amazon invests 4 billion in the artificial intelligence company Anthropic

Amazon has announced a significant investment of $4 billion in Anthropic, an American company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) and creator of the Claude chatbot. This investment is part of a strategic collaboration with the goal of accelerating the development of foundational AI models and making them accessible to Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers.

Anthropic, led by siblings Daniela and Dario Amodei, former OpenAI employees, will use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to develop these AI models. This partnership will allow Amazon to advance in the semiconductor industry, competing with companies like NVIDIA.

Jeff Bezos' company is considering acquiring a minority stake in Anthropic, making a first investment of $1.25 billion according to the Financial Times, but could increase said investment to $4 billion. This decision represents an important step in his participation in the competition for the development of generative artificial intelligence, which allows the creation of original content from large data sets.

In addition, it is considering incorporating the technology developed by the company into some of its platforms, such as Amazon Bedrock. This investment represents the e-commerce company's largest commitment in an area related to AWS, the global leader in cloud services.

Amazon's announcement comes in a context in which other technology companies, such as Microsoft and Google, are also investing heavily in the development of AI. Microsoft, for example, allocated $10 billion to OpenAI to compete in this field.

The collaboration between Bezos' company and Anthropic will allow AWS to offer its customers access to highly customizable AI models and advanced tuning capabilities. This will drive the development of innovative applications and experiences for Amazon users.
