The San Francisco 49ers will likely get a very good player with their second pick of the 2017 NFL draft. However, they could reap a bounty of picks and/or players if they're willing to deal the pick to a team wanting to trade up.
San Francisco general manager John Lynch said he's still considering his options for the pick for the upcoming draft in April.
"We could stay pat right there and find a fabulous player, a game-changing player," Lynch told the San Francisco Chronicle. "It gives us a lot of flexibility to do some other things if we chose to be bold. There are going to be people that covet the pick we have, so there's going to be some people that want to move up."
The Cleveland Browns are expected to select Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett with the No. 1 pick. Opinions are all over the map when it comes to who is the best player following Garrett. Some draft experts say the 49ers should use the pick to select a quarterback, but none of the top-three quarterbacks - North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky, Clemson's DeShaun Watson or Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer - are considered franchise-changing quarterbacks worthy of the second overall pick.
Trading down would likely give the 49ers plenty of picks to upgrade their roster in a number of areas, including wide receiver, linebacker and running back.
The Browns received the No. 8 pick in the first round, a third-round pick (No. 77) and a fourth-round pick (No. 100 ) in the 2016 draft, a first-round pick in this year's draft and a second-round pick in 2018 NFL draft in exchange for trading the No. 2 pick to Philadelphia in 2016.
Under Lynch and first-year coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers are revamping the roster, a roster that was thin on talent in 2016, leading to a 2-14 record.
