After being charged with soliciting prostitute by West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force, Myron Pope, former vice president of student life at the University of Alabama, has resigned.
Pope was arrested as one of 15 men involved in a sting where men tried to pay for their sex via an app. They were then taken into custody after speaking with an undercover officer at the agreed location, the Crimson White.
"I have some difficult news to share with you today. "Vice President of Student Life Myron Papa has resigned from University of Alabama following his arrest," University of Alabama President Stuart R. Bell informed the campus community on Friday. We understand that this news will be hard for our community. I will appoint an interim vice president of student life and that person, along the many professionals in this division, will continue to be available to us all. Keep taking care of yourself and each other.
Multiple media outlets reported that Pope was arrested in Tuscaloosa County on Thursday. He was released after posting $1,000 bail. The Birmingham News reports that Pope is also a former Crimson Tide football star.
Although the identities of the men who were arrested are not known, all 15 have been charged with the misdemeanor charge of soliciting prostitutes as a result. Some face additional felony charges.
"Sex trafficking wouldn't be as profitable if buyers didn't want commercial sexual services. This is why we hope that these operations targeting buyers will show that this is something we take seriously. "Our goal is to prevent future exploitations of human trafficking victims forced or coerced into prostituting," West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force Capt. Phil Simpson stated this in a Saturday press release.
According to a news release, Pope was appointed to his most recent post at the university in February 2020.
From 1997 to 2000, he was a member of The University of Alabama's administrative staff as the director of alternative certification recruitment programs and as a clinical assistant professor within the higher education administration program.
