A young Arsenal promise remains quadriplegic after being drugged on a night out

The young Daniel Cain was considered one of the promises with the most future in English football. The young man, born in Hemel Hempstead and who is now 23 years old, was living the dream that any kid his age could wish for: he was a member of the Arsenal youth academy and the expectations around him were very high. But tragedy crossed his life one night in 2020.

On June 9, Daniel suffered a cardiac arrest while out partying with his friends due to a drink that was contaminated with a chemical substance.

The friends were the first to notice the situation when they saw Cain in "a strange color". The young man began to lose consciousness until he went into cardiac arrest, but thanks to the medical services, a greater tragedy could be avoided after resuscitating him. It took 25 minutes. After the event, the ex-canteran remained in the ICU for a total of 25 days, in a coma, and with total paralysis of his arms and legs.

Daniel managed to wake up from the coma but the excessive time that his brain spent without receiving oxygen left him with serious sequelae.

"When he woke up, he couldn't do anything, he couldn't move, he was like a newborn," said the former footballer's mother, Tracy Cain, in an interview with The Independent.

After almost three years of the fateful event, the young man has been able to recover some cognitive faculties, such as long-term memories, although he continues to need help for daily tasks such as eating or cleaning himself, as the parent has revealed to the aforementioned medium. .

Even so, Tracy is positive about Daniel's evolution. To help in his recovery, the family has launched a GoFundMe with the intention of raising funds and contributing financially to the young man's expensive treatment, which amounts to more than 27,000 euros a year, with the hope that Cain can return to walk and go recovering normality in their day to day.
