Work begins to decontaminate the Sant Adrià de Besòs beach

The works to decontaminate the beach of Sant Adrià de Besòs (Barcelona) began yesterday Wednesday and are being carried out by the Company for the Management of Industrial Waste (EMGRISA), as reported by the Government this Thursday in a statement.

The works consist of the excavation of some 6,883 m³ of sand affected by concentrations of heavy metals higher than those allowed in the environmental legislation of Catalonia, in the replacement of this contaminated sand by clean sand, and in the management of 14,693 tons of material.

"The extracted sand will be valued or deposited in a landfill depending on the analysis and the relevant legislation," explained the Government, which has budgeted these works at 1,197,849.53 euros.

The concentrations of heavy metals higher than those allowed were detected on the beach "when the quality of the soil in the area was analyzed for the installation of fiber optic cables for telecommunications" and "its origin is the old industrial environment of the area ".
