The Aemet warns of heavy rains and storms over the weekend that will sweep these areas of Spain

An Atlantic low pressure system will affect the peninsula and the Balearic Islands starting this Friday, leaving abundant cloudiness and almost widespread rainfall accompanied by storms in almost all of Spain, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

“We have the formation of a storm in the Atlantic, a typical autumn storm, which this Friday is going to leave abundant rain. The passage of cold air prior to the storm is going to leave abundant rain in a good part of the peninsula," summarized the agency's spokesperson, Rubén del Campo.

Despite the intensity of the rainfall, the person in charge rules out a situation similar to that of DANA two weeks ago, although the instability will continue throughout the weekend.

The effects of this Atlantic system will be noticeable starting this Friday. For today, we expect almost widespread rainfall, accompanied by storms, which could occur from the early hours in the Mediterranean area, moving from southwest to northeast throughout the day, and could be abundant and locally strong in Valencia, Alicante and the Catalan coast. They will also affect a large part of the rest of the Peninsula and will be abundant in large areas of the central and southern interior.

Given this forecast, the Aemet has activated the yellow warning in Andalusia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia, Community of Madrid, Region of Murcia, Navarra, Valencian Community and Ceuta due to accumulated precipitation up to 20mm in just one hour. For the Catalan coast, the warning will be orange (significant risk) for accumulations of up to 40mm in one hour.

Regarding temperatures, minimum temperatures are increasing in the central north and without significant changes in the rest; and increasing maximums in the Cantabrian Sea and decreasing in much of the rest of the Peninsula.

The weekend will be marked by instability, by the Atlantic low pressure system and by the entry of a cold front crossing the eastern half and another entering from the west, as well as another system in the extreme northeast.

On Saturday, locally strong showers and storms are expected in Girona in the early hours. Precipitation and storms could also be locally strong or persistent in the northwest of the peninsula and west of the central system.

For Sunday, the rains could concentrate in the west of Galicia and the west of the Central system. There will be intervals of strong wind on the western coast of Galicia and very strong gusts in the mountains of the extreme north.
