Map | The 19 places on the Spanish coast that may have wind farms

Green light for the installation of offshore wind farms along the Spanish coast. The Council of Ministers has approved this Tuesday the maritime space management plans (POEM), which include a total of 19 polygons where it is considered that the mills can be ideally installed to generate energy.

According to the plan, Galicia, Asturias and the Canary Islands would host the majority of marine parks. In total, the Council of Ministers has located seven polygons on the Atlantic coast, in the northwest of Spain. With regard to the Canary Islands, the southeastern coasts of the islands of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Palma de Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote would host another seven.

In the south of the peninsula, between Gibraltar and Almería, the Executive has projected two more areas. The other three would be located: one in the north of Catalonia —in front of the Golf de Roses— and two in the Balearic archipelago, specifically in the east of Menorca.

In total, on the Spanish coasts, 5,000 square kilometers are reserved for the development of offshore wind power, which represents 0.46% of the jurisdictional waters of the Spanish maritime space (which totals one million square kilometers).
