The revolution has already arrived

Expressions such as revolution, historical leap or disruptive change are used with unjustified frequency to describe social phenomena that do not deserve these terms. But perhaps it is not an exaggeration to say that we are on the threshold of a true revolution. The development of artificial intelligence, which pokes its head shyly into public debate, will change our lives. We can see a social transformation of a greater scope than that which was experienced with the emergence of the internet. New technology will improve our existence in many ways. Medicine is one of the most obvious. But it will also lead to the emergence of more risks for coexistence and democracy. The dissemination of manipulated information will be easier than ever. Some voices have already begun to call for greater attention to training in the humanities so that young people have a better background that will help them face the future with the tools of ethics or philosophy.

The Internet has destroyed some jobs and created others. It has sped up our daily lives. It has connected us universally and consistently. It has also given enormous power to large multinational companies that gain control of our data, game the market with it, and even endanger established democracies. Citizens have more information than ever before and, despite this, lies fly in their air, even many falsehoods have more credibility than verified news. All this is forming societies suspicious of their governments, companies or the media. In short, distrustful societies.

The rise of AI will accentuate these trends. Technological changes have always brought short-term advantages and disadvantages. This is how humanity has progressed. But this will be a fairly rapid transformation, so AI will test society's ability to adapt. Also that of governments that will have to help in this task, in addition to extending a hand to those who will inevitably be left behind along the way.
