The polls clean up the politics of Sant Vicenç de Montalt

In Sant Vicenç de Montalt, one of the most politically troubled municipalities in Catalonia and the object of study for reprehensible political practices, the ballot box has delivered justice and has helped to clean up fragmentation and political anxiety. And they have done so by favoring the councilors most affected by the intrigues of the political forces that fueled the two crises that the City Council has experienced in the last five years and that forced the abrupt departure of two mayors. In the municipality of Maresme, in these municipal elections, they have gone from eight parties to five.

The force with the most votes in these elections in Sant Vicenç has been the Semper Santvi platform led by the militant and former socialist mayor, Javier Sandoval, who has to start negotiations to form a new stability government, having obtained five representatives, two more than the that the PSC had in 2019. Sandoval, as mayor, in September 2020 was accused of a dubious case of harassment for which he decided to resign despite declaring himself completely innocent. The former mayor has been rehabilitated at the polls with 27.21% of the votes, but also his management at the head of the previous government and the success in combining a citizen platform with a majority of independent candidates, which brings together various political sensibilities, with which he has won the elections.

Miquel Àngel Martínez, former mayor until 2018 and expelled from the government by a motion of no confidence accused of having used municipal construction materials for his home, is the second force in number of votes after receiving the impact of intrigues and complaints in which even made hidden recordings, a fact that is pending judicial resolution. Martínez has obtained three representatives with Junts per Sant Vicenç, taking most of the cake baked with the fragmentation of the parties of the old Convergència.

Precisely, the inducers of this convergent division have been the main ones punished by the voters. This is the candidacy set up by the former councilor of the PSC, who later became non-attached and this mandate has been made with the presidency of the local JxCat group, Robert Subirón, whose name has always been present in most scandals and intrigues local politicians, along with prominent municipal officials. Subirón looked for Amadeu Clofent, a former CiU councilor, to lead a candidacy that has only obtained one representative.

Another of the political actions that the voter of Sant Vicenç de Montalt has not forgiven is the change of seats. A clear example is Cristian Garralaga, a former PSC councilor who became non-attached and joined the project of the last post-convergent mayor, Víctor Llasera, who ended up leaving JxCat, precisely due to disagreements with Subirón, to create the Som candidacy, which also failed due to the disagreements with councilor Cristian Garralaga. Platform that did not get to stand for election.

In parallel is Miquel Rovira, who was a CDC militant, who later went on to the CUP to lead the 2019 candidacy and ended up being expelled from the independence party by the Cupera assembly for not abiding by its dictates, therefore, without abandoning the act of councilor who was claimed, he became non-attached. The two "bounced" councilors finally ended up in Valents, with Garralaga as mayor and Rovira as number two. “The Odd Couple” as they are called in local political circles, has been a fiasco and has not gained representation.

The former candidate of the PP, Francesc Guillem, deserves a special mention, accused of fraud, who in 2019 refused to return the minutes of councilor and regional councilor to the popular, whose economic allocations he has been receiving until the end of the mandate. Guillem, who was fired by the then mayor, Javier Sandoval, has tried to form another local political party, which included members of his family, an initiative that has failed miserably for the benefit of the new PP candidacy led by Elisa de Mata and that it has obtained two representatives.

Another of the notable changes has been the incorporation of one of the promoters of the investigation into the accusations against Sandoval, Maria Vilalta, the former councilor of 9 Sant Vicenç, as number two in the Primaries candidacy led by Sergi Rabat and which has obtained two councillors. The Vilalta neighborhood platform succumbed in the attempt, led by Jaume Arcos, who in these elections has run with number 5 of JxCat, and the last spokesman, Jaume Gumà, also very involved in the operations that ended with the motion of no confidence against Miquel Angel Martinez.

Surprisingly, the republican formation of ERC, led by Laia Sorribes, has been left out of the council. The Impulsors per la República candidacy, led by the ex-militant critic of JxCat and CDC, Daniel Redón, also failed in the attempt, which has not obtained representation and, of course, that of Valents, Garralaga and Rovira.
