The bases of Junts and ERC in Barcelona finally endorse the government pact between both formations and the investiture of Xavier Trias as mayor of Barcelona, which will take place this afternoon.
The first to settle the issue were the Republicans. The militancy of the ERC Barcelona Federation approved this morning to reach an agreement with the winning force of the last municipal elections, Trias for Barcelona, to form a government in the City Council of the Catalan capital. The decision comes after an extraordinary congress was held this Saturday morning at the party headquarters to endorse the negotiation process carried out in recent days by the municipal leader of the Republicans, Ernest Maragall, with the candidate by JxCat, Xavier Trias.
The formation has assured in a statement that "it has always worked" to promote social and transformative policies in the city. It also ensures that the objective of the next mandate is to continue working to fulfill this purpose, "guaranteeing and promoting a Barcelona that works, a Barcelona capital of Catalonia and a Barcelona of progress". In this way, the militancy of Esquerra Barcelona has validated the option of reaching a government agreement with Junts, the details of which will be announced in the next few hours.
Around two in the afternoon, the result of the telematic vote carried out among the affiliates of the Junts per Catalunya federation in Barcelona was announced. The consultation was held from eight in the morning to two in the afternoon. Sources from the formation detailed that 97.83% of the participants supported the possibility of forming a government together with the Republicans.
In this way, if the socialist Jaume Collboni fails to gather the support of BComú and PP in the next few hours, Trias will recover the mayoralty that he lost 8 years ago at the hands of Ada Colau. However, the support of the five ERC councilors for Trias will not be enough for Trias to reach an absolute majority, since, with the 11 JxCat councilors, they will add a total of 16 supports.
Collboni, who obtained second place in the elections on May 28, has sought the support of Barcelona en Comú and the PP in recent days to overcome the bar of 21 councilors that marks the absolute majority. However, both common and popular refuse to enter the equation, so only an agreement in extremis would prevent Trias from becoming the new mayor of the city.
Since the day after the elections, the negotiating teams of Trias and Maragall have been working to close an agreement that will lead their respective political formations to govern the Catalan capital starting this afternoon, when the investiture plenary session is scheduled to take place. The agreement, which was practically closed yesterday, Friday, would allow Trias to recover the mayoralty, with Maragall as number two in the City Council.
The first distribution of the governmental organizational chart originally reserved four mayoral positions for Junts and two for ERC. Those of the formation led by Xavier Trias will be taken over by Neus Munté, Jordi Martí, Damià Calvet and Victòria Alsina, while the Republicans will be occupied by Ernest Maragall and Elisenda Alamany.
