The Council will not touch the Law of Use and Alicante will not have a language exemption from Valencian

The Valencian Government has no intention of touching the Valencian Language Use and Teaching Act of 1983 which, in addition to regulating and promoting the use of Valencian in administration and teaching, establishes those areas of linguistic predominance in which it is possible exemption; that is to say, that the students are not assessed for the subject of Valencian.

The Vox municipal group in Alicante raised this week the possibility of the second city of the Valencian Community becoming part of the Castilian linguistic predominance. However, as this newspaper has explained, the proposal was withdrawn claiming that because "work is being done on a reform to eliminate the linguistic imposition in the city of Alicante from the Generalitat."

However, this Friday the spokesperson for the Valencian Executive, Ruth Merino, indicated that the Llei d'Ús will not be modified to introduce a change with respect to Alicante. Sources from the Ministry of Education have confirmed to La Vanguardia their refusal to change this historical regulation and that it was approved without any vote against 40 years ago.

Yes, they have pointed out from the department headed by José Antonio Rovira that some articles of Law 4/2018, of February 21, of the Generalitat, which regulates and promotes multilingualism in the Valencian educational system, will be suspended, "in municipal terms of Castilian linguistic predominance".

Thus, the Accompaniment Law already foresees eliminating the obligation to teach a minimum of 25% of the teaching hours in Valencian and to teach at least one other core subject in this language.

However, despite Vox's request in Alicante, it does not seem that these changes can be applied to the city of Alicante since the regulations that make it clear that the city is part of the Valencian linguistic predominance will not be affected.
