The America's Cup will attract 2.5 million visitors in two months

During the two months in which the oldest and most important nautical competition in the world will be held - between August and October next year - Barcelona will attract 2.5 million visitors. The expectation that the America's Cup will raise, in addition to the preparation and celebration, will mean an economic impact of around 1,200 million euros and the generation of practically 1,900 jobs in the city. These figures are some of those highlighted in the report commissioned by the Barcelona Capital Nàutica Foundation from Pompeu Fabra University (UPF).

The study on the economic impact, signed by Júlia Bosch and Carles Murillo, from the Center d'Estudis Sports-Lab (UPF), and Jaume García, from the Department of Economics and Business at the UPF, highlights that 195 million these 1,200 million economic impact correspond to investments and organization, 689 to the expenses derived from the 2.5 million visits planned by the organization and 231 to the expenses of the teams that participate. This section includes the six teams in the main category, with an average of 150 companions each, the twelve women's teams and the twelve teams made up exclusively of young competitors.

The increase in productive activity in the Catalan economy associated with the America's Cup is estimated at 2,285 million euros. The report, commissioned in December with the data available at the time, was made public this week, during which the first two major local sponsors of the event were also announced.

Some, in addition to sponsoring the competition, will also ally with the host team, Emirates Team New Zealand; and the others will name the women's competition, the first to be organized in the 171-year history of this trophy.

At the port, the works on the bases of the six main teams are progressing in parallel, Grant Dalton's New Zealand team expect to settle in the city during the next month of July.
