Regional elections 2023: calendar of key dates for May 28

On May 28, regional elections will be held in twelve communities in Spain (Aragón, Principality of Asturias, Illes Balears, Canarias, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Comunitat Valenciana, Extremadura, Comunidad de Madrid, Región de Murcia, Comunidad Foral de Navarra and La Rioja) and in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. These elections, which will be chosen by the deputies of the parliaments, will be the prelude to the general elections scheduled for the end of the year.

In these twelve communities the municipal elections will also coincide, in which the representatives in the local administrations will be renewed. Below, we go over the key dates before we get to May 28.

The electoral period began on April 4 with the publication of the decree calling for elections in the respective regional Official Gazettes. The parties have until April 24 to present their candidacies to the Provincial Electoral Boards, which will receive the final approval on May 2.

Between April 29 and May 3, the public draw for the members of the polling stations will take place. Designees will receive notification three days after the draw is held. During the following seven days, they may present allegations on causes that prevent them from being members of the polling stations.

Voting by correspondence can be requested until May 18. Between May 8 and 21, those who have made the request will receive the documentation at their home address. From then on, they will have until the 24th to cast their vote at a Post Office.

As a novelty of these elections, the requested vote disappears, after the reform of the electoral law approved last year and with which it seeks to encourage participation.

The electoral campaign will begin on Friday, May 12 at 00:00, and it will be from this moment that the political formations will be able to appeal to the vote directly through electoral propaganda. They will also do it with face-to-face events in different parts of the territory. The 22nd will be the last day that electoral polls can be published. On Friday, May 26 at midnight, the campaign will end and the 27th will be the day of reflection.

Election day will be held on May 28. The polling stations will open their doors at 9 a.m. and voters will be able to vote until 8 p.m. To do so, they must go to their usual school (it is necessary to verify the census card) and prove their identity through the DNI, passport, driving license or residence card. Once the day closes, the counting of votes will begin. As established by the Electoral Regime Law, the ballot papers for the local elections will be scrutinized first, followed by those for the regional elections.
