Montero recriminates the PSOE that the reform of the 'only yes is yes' is done by agreeing to "setbacks" with the PP

Irene Montero, Minister of Equality, did not mention the PSOE, the majority partner in the Spanish government, although she did not need to mention it when she spoke of the reform of the law of only yes is yes. "Agreeing a setback in women's rights with the PP is not an answer and it will only sharpen and deepen the problem," she stressed.

The procedures to reform this legislation took their first steps this week in Madrid with a proposal that the Socialists carried out with the support of the right and the rejection of United We Can.

But Montero did not close the doors to reach a solution with the progressive forces. "The judicial decisions to reduce sentences, even though they are minority, have generated concern in the victims and in society before which a united response must be given," he remarked. possibilities of agreement, I don't think so, I know," he remarked.

The minister made these statements at the press conference held at the United Nations Organization (UN), where she has participated in the general debate of the 67th edition of the Commission on the Legal and Social Condition of Women (CSW).

In her speech at the assembly and in other meetings held these days at the UN headquarters in Manhattan, the Spanish leader claimed Spain's place as an "international benchmark" in advances on women's rights.

This does not prevent the meetings from expressing concern about the expansive reaction of sectors of the extreme right and hate groups with "attempts to curb women's rights", as well as LGBTI and transgender groups. "They have to stop their feet by conquering and building more rights," she prescribed in the face of that advance.

In this sense, he recalled that in Spain, as is the case now in the United States, there has already been an attempt to curtail the right to abortion "and ended with the resignation of the minister."

Referring specifically and on two occasions, he criticized "the power of the media" because "it allows the normalization and laundering of sexist discourses", which condones "hate crimes and crimes against the LGTBI population".

That critical aspect disappeared when considering the May 8 demonstrations. Where a journalist insisted on speaking of division, Montero replied that this was a negative observation, while she saw it as a demonstration of the strength of feminism due to its diversity.

“Differences do not prevent a common agenda. We have some different visions, but it is diversity that allows us to build a common agenda," he reiterated.

Montero made a feint so as not to condemn the attack on a photographer at the 8-M demonstration in Barclona. "The women overflowed the streets and squares with peaceful mobilizations and with great joy for the reunion," he stressed. "Any specific issue that may have occurred cannot overshadow the strength of the feminist movement," she remarked.
