Elections: The PP snatches away from the PSOE Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Aragon, Extremadura and La Rioja

Popular tsunami. The PP and its leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, are undoubtedly the big winners of the municipal elections (the popular ones outnumber the Socialists by more than 2,500 councilors) but above all the regional ones this Sunday, as the exit polls and confirm the scrutiny data. The popular ones, who retain Madrid and Murcia, achieve spectacular results and seize five communities from the socialists in addition to recovering Cantabria.

This is the case of the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, Aragon, Extremadura and La Rioja, where the PP candidates Carlos Mazón, Marga Prohens, Jorge Azcón, María Guardiola and Gonzalo Capellán may respectively unseat the socialists Ximo Puig, Francina Armengol, Javier Lambán , Guillermo Fernández Vara and Concha Andreu with the votes of the extreme right. The socialist debacle is so serious that the president of Castilla La Mancha, the socialist Emiliano García Page, suffers until the last moment to preserve the absolute majority set at 17 seats that allows him to retain power against PP and Vox.

The PP has clearly prevailed in the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, Aragon and La Rioja, while in Extremadura it has tied for seats with the PSOE (28), which has won in votes. However, the ultra-right has obtained one more deputy than Podemos, which will give the presidency to Guardiola, who will become the first woman in charge of the regional government.

In addition, both the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and the mayor of the capital, José Luís Martínez Almeida, will probably be able to reissue their respective governments with absolute majorities.

The bad news for the socialists does not end here. The PP candidate for mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, will oust the current socialist mayor, Antonio Muñoz, and the same will happen in the city of Valencia, where María José Catalá (PP) will do the same with Joan Ribó (Compromís) who ruled with the Valencian socialists. In Barcelona, where the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, had hopes with Jaume Collboni, Xavier Trias (Junts) has prevailed with 11 councilors. The socialist has obtained 10, followed by Ada Colau (ECP) with 9. Ernest Maragall (ERC)

The Socialists will retain Asturias, where Adrián Barbón will continue as president, and the Canary Islands, where former minister Carolina Darias will not be able to reissue the so-called flower pact with three other minor forces but will have options to govern if she reaches an agreement with the Canary Islands Coalition. The socialist María Chivite could also keep Navarra but agreeing with EH Bildu, Geroa Bai and Contigo Zurekin.

For his part, the popular Fernando López Miras will be able to reissue his executive after winning the regional elections in the Region of Murcia by obtaining 21 of the 45 deputies of the Regional Assembly, which leaves him two seats short of an absolute majority that forces him to agree on the investiture with Vox.

And in Cantabria, the PP candidate, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, will take over the presidency by obtaining, together with Vox, the absolute majority for a single seat, so that the hitherto president, Miguel Ángel Revilla, will lose his status after the collapse of his party, the PRC.
