Cubs open 39th consecutive spring training in Mesa with split-squad games

Less than four months after winning their first World Series title since 1908, the Chicago Cubs will open exhibition play Saturday with split-squad games against the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants.

This marks the 39th consecutive season the Cubs will open spring training in Mesa, Ariz., the longest active streak in the Cactus League.

The Cubs will play the A's at Sloan Park, where a capacity crowd is expected. Jason Heyward will bat leadoff for the Cubs against Jesse Hahn.

At Scottsdale Stadium, Kyle Schwarber will return to left field against the Giants and Matt Cain.
