Correos asks the JEC to extend until tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. the deadline to vote by mail

Correos has addressed the Central Electoral Board to request an extension of the term to deposit the vote by mail until tomorrow, Friday at 2:00 p.m. The term to cast the vote by mail ends, for now, today, July 20, "during the extended hours of each office."

According to La Sexta, at 1:00 p.m. the JEC will meet to decide whether or not to accept the Post Office request. José Luis Alonso Nistal, Deputy Director of Post Office Operations, assured this morning that there are still "170,000 votes to be collected", and he affirmed that "everyone be calm" because "the offices are not going to close if you are in line".

In the letter, Correos justifies its proposal "in an effort to favor the exercise of the right to vote of all interested citizens." In addition, he adds that some citizens have approached his offices "interested in the possibility of forwarding their electoral documentation to a different address." "It involves an extraordinary human effort and resources for Correos," adds the company to request the extension of the deadline.

Until now, when the JEC has received a request from the Post Office about an extension of the term, the Board has accepted it. The request is made after Correos requested that anyone wishing to vote by mail "carry out the procedures as soon as possible, taking advantage of the extended hours of the post offices, and that they try not to leave it until the last minute to avoid waiting and unwanted accumulations".

Yesterday, more than 282,000 people were still waiting to collect the vote by mail for the elections next Sunday at the offices of the postal company, having not been located at home when the postman went to deliver it up to two times, while 2,342,430 documents were delivered by hand to voters, 89%.

For the electoral day of July 23, Correos is entrusted with the mission of delivering the votes sent by mail at the polling stations. To do this, it will establish a special logistics deployment, made up of more than 14,000 professionals, including delivery personnel, offices and treatment centers, and it will mobilize all the vehicles in its fleet that are necessary for the correct development of its mission.
