"This was Aless's last wish, to bring a child of his into the world". And so, Ana Obregón has clarified that she is not the mother, but the grandmother of little Ana, who came into the world on March 20 in Miami as a result of surrogacy with an egg from a donor and the sperm of his son, who died in May 2020 at the age of 27 from cancer. The magazine ¡Hola! offers an interview with the 68-year-old actress and businesswoman, who poses for several photos with the newborn, who is her biological granddaughter but her legal daughter, in the apartment she has rented in Miami.
The images published last week in which Ana Obregón was seen leaving the Miami hospital with the baby in her arms gave way to a great political, social and ethical debate about surrogacy, which is not legal in Spain, and the 'age of the actress giving due to the fact that she was the mother of the baby. "This debate is absurd, because this technique of assisted reproduction has been done for many years and is legal in many countries. But what scandal is this, now?"
"This little girl is not my daughter, but my granddaughter. She is Aless's daughter and when she grows up I will explain to her that her father was a hero, so that she knows who she is and how proud she should be of him. I made the decision to start the surrogacy process the day my child went to heaven", he explains. "No one in the world can question the fact that, when a mother buries her child, she must fulfill her last will. If there are opposing opinions, I do not tolerate any of them, nor will I admit any of them", says taxative.
As the protagonist explains, her son Aless verbally communicated to his parents – Ana and Alessandro Lequio – his desire to be a father a week before he died. When Aless was diagnosed with cancer and was about to start chemotherapy, doctors recommended that he save sperm samples in case the drugs affected him in the future to ensure he could have children . "These samples - adds the actress - were kept in New York. That day we were in the hospital; Aless was already very ill and told us that, if anything happened to him, he wanted us to know that he wanted to leave offspring in this life. Even if it wasn't there anymore. Since that moment, the only thing that has allowed me to continue living every day, every second, is to fulfill the mission of bringing Aless's daughter into the world." As he reveals, it has been three very difficult years. "The pregnancy did not occur on the first attempt, not by a long shot; they've been several times and every time it didn't go well I was terribly upset, and had to start all over again."
Ana explains that little Ana Sandra Lequio Obregón will have dual nationality and that she is legally her daughter. Now he has to register it at the Spanish consulate and wait for the American passport. "I think that in about a month we will be able to return home". There he will sleep in Aless's room. "It's a room where I haven't touched anything yet, because I don't feel capable. I wanted to make him a separate quartet, but I told him: 'you will sleep with your papa, who will take care of you like an angel during the nights'".
The presenter does not rule out repeating the experience in the future: "My son wanted to have five children, so maybe the child will also arrive one day". And he justifies himself again: "I failed my son and I couldn't save him, but this, which I swore to him with my life, I have done. It is something that only fathers or mothers who have lost a child will fully understand."
She claims that she died on May 13, 2020, when her son died, but that she was born again on March 20, 2023. "I have a reason to live. I've worked all my life and, thank God, I'm lucky enough to be able to leave it in a very good position when I'm gone. And until then, I have all the love in the world to give him."
