Using antabuse for cancer patients

Odense University Hospital is currently investigating whether antabuse can help a seriously ill cancer patients.

Antabuse is used for alcoholics to stop drinking. But nothing suggests that that antabuse also can help cancer patients to live longer.

OUH is working in the experiment, together with copenhagen university hospital and Herlev Hospital.

participating in a total of 28 patients in the trial. Common to them is that they have cancer in the colon or rectum, and that chemotherapy no longer works, because the patients have been resistant.

laboratory studies of the Danish Cancer society have shown that the active ingredient in antabuse, is that the cancer cells again become sensitive to chemotherapy, says forsøgsleder Line Tarpgaard to fyfe.dk.

It will take a few years before there can be drawn a conclusion of the experiment.
