549 migrants rescued in El Hierro and Tenerife

Maritime Rescue and the Civil Guard have rescued two canoes with 324 migrants in waters near the island of El Hierro during the night of this Thursday, in addition to another 225 who arrived on the island of Tenerife. In this way, the number of people arriving in the Canary Islands in the last 24 hours amounts to 549, according to data collected from Maritime Rescue, the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center of 112 of the Canary Islands and the Red Cross.

The rescues of the two boats with 324 people occurred after two signals were detected with the echolocator of the Integrated Exterior Surveillance System (SIVE), setting off the alarms and deploying the relevant patrols to reach the area and accompany the canoes to the La Restinga dock, the closest coastal point to the location where they were.

Of the two canoes, the one carrying 243 people carried ten minors and was escorted by the sea rescue, while the Civil Guard took care of the one with 81 people on board, 19 of them minors. All members of the expedition are in good condition.

Once at the La Restinga dock, in the municipality of El Pinar, in El Hierro, the health device assisted some of the migrants from the cayuco, since some had hypothermia and dehydration.

Likewise, at the Los Cristianos dock, in Arona, Tenerife, of the 225 migrants who arrived, 48 were minors. The Tenerife health system had to transfer an adult male and a minor to the hospital.
